The film Waking Ned Divine directly addresses the individuals role in the welfare of the community, one of the topics presented in the honors What Is the Good Life?

 

The movie “Waking Ned Divine” is set in the small Irish town of Tullymore.  The main character, Jackie O’Shea, learns that a member of his small community wins the Irish national lottery. Jackie is anxious to learn who the winner is so he can pretend to be close friends with them in order to mooch money from them. In order to learn the identity of the winner, Jackie plans a chicken dinner party and invites everyone in the town.......

Constitution Week: Party Polarization

To celebrate constitution week, guest speakers were invited to speak about a politically relevant topic and relate it to the constitution. Donna Waller spoke about party polarization and how it relates to the constitution. The constitution was also covered in the Governing a good life section of the honors What Is The Good Life course.

 

Political polarization is when an individual’s stance on a given issue is more likely to be strictly defined by their identification with a particular political party. Polarization with regards to political parties is similar. Party polarization is when two parties become ideologically controlled, meaning that they often take the opposite stance on.......

Religion and Globalization in South Asia

This event discussed the impact of religion and globalization in southern Asia. The speaker for the event was Dr. Deepa Nair. Dr. Nair is Assistant professor of history at UCF. She was born in India and holds a PhD in history that she received from the National University of Singapore.

 

Dr. Nair’s presentation focused on introducing us to the variety of religions that are seen in southern Asia. he good life tour of the Harn Museum of Art covered a variety of works from different artists, each work representing one or more characteristics of a good life.

     The first piece of art that was covered on the tour was “Old Man’s Cloth”, a piece displayed in the contemporary collection. From a distance the artwork appeared to be a piece of fabric, like a carpet or a drape, but upon further inspection I noticed that it was not made of fabric at all. The “Got Beethoven” concern by the Gainesville Orchestra was a very interesting experience.

I was very surprised at the number of people that attended the performance. The entire event was sold out and people where actually turned away at the door due to a lack of available seating.
